Case Summary

Mehmet Edip Taşar, a 68-year-old critically ill prisoner held at Marmara (Silivri) Prison, had been struggling with serious health problems for an extended period. Taşar suffered from severe cardiovascular conditions, including heart failure, and had undergone approximately 18 angioplasty procedures with 8 stents implanted in his heart vessels. As a chronic diabetes patient, his deteriorating health left him unable to walk independently, manage daily needs, and he relied on the support of his cellmates to survive in prison conditions. Taşar also experienced difficulty breathing, developed skin bruising due to anemia, and his weight had dropped to around 40 kilograms. Reports indicated that even during hospital transfers, he faced serious complications, did not receive adequate treatment, and struggled to stand even in detention. The Forensic Medicine Institution (ATK) had previously issued three reports stating that Taşar “could remain in prison.” However, in its final report dated 27 February 2026, ATK concluded that he “could not remain in prison,” prompting a renewed request for sentence suspension. Due to his worsening condition, Taşar was transferred to a hospital on 3 March 2026. Despite medical care, his condition did not improve, and he passed away on 24 March 2026 at the hospital where he had been taken. This case has once again highlighted the human rights violations arising from keeping critically ill prisoners in prison.
