Case Summary

Durmuş Zorlu, who was being held in İzmir Kırıklar Cezaevi, died after suffering a heart attack in prison. According to available accounts, Zorlu regularly played football with fellow prisoners, but on the day of the incident he reportedly said he did not want to play and would remain seated on the sidelines. A short time later, he collapsed. Despite intervention efforts, he could not be saved. According to relatives, Zorlu had been experiencing deep emotional distress related to his circumstances and was struggling to cope with both the accusations against him and imprisonment. Before being dismissed under an emergency decree (KHK), he had served for many years as a police officer. After losing his position, he reportedly worked as a taxi driver to support himself. Zorlu was imprisoned in January 2026 following a sentence of 7 years and 6 months. He had previously spent 19 months in prison. He is survived by four children.
