Case Summary
Emre Turan, who is being held in Afyon Prison, has experienced a rapid deterioration in his health condition. He was prosecuted on allegations of working as a teacher at a private educational institution that was later closed due to alleged links to the Gülen movement, having an account at Bank Asya, and using the ByLock messaging application. He was sentenced to 6 years and 10 months in prison. Turan was first arrested in January 2020 and released three months later. On July 31, 2023, he was re-arrested and initially sent to Muğla Prison. In June 2025, he was transferred to Afyon Prison. While in prison, his sentence was upheld by the Court of Cassation (Yargıtay). Turan has been struggling with ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, since 2010. On January 9, 2026, during a gastroenterology examination at Afyon State Hospital, the doctor stated that the medication Turan had been using for five years needed to be discontinued because it could put pressure on the spinal cord and potentially cause a risk of paralysis. However, no alternative treatment or medication plan was provided to replace the discontinued drug. Although the doctor’s note indicated that Turan should be re-evaluated after six months, the prison administration relied on this note to reject further hospital referral requests and sent him directly back to prison. Following the discontinuation of his medication, Turan’s ulcerative colitis symptoms intensified, and he began experiencing severe bleeding. His wife, Buket Turan, has expressed serious concern for his life and has been attempting to raise public awareness about his condition through social media posts.
