Case Summary

Sermin Demirdağ, currently held in Sincan Women’s Closed Prison, was arrested in 1993 and has been transferred between various prisons over the years before being placed in Sincan. Although she became eligible for conditional release on March 7, 2023, her release has been postponed seven times by the Prison Administration and Observation Board. The Board first convened on February 23, claiming that Demirdağ was “not of good conduct” and postponed her release for three months. When this period ended, the Board met again on May 25 and extended the postponement by another three months. Subsequent decisions were made on August 17 (six months), February 8, 2024 (six months), August 1 (six months), and January 23, 2025 (nine months). The most recent evaluation took place on October 16, during which the Board questioned whether Demirdağ admitted to committing the alleged offense and whether she expressed remorse for her alleged political activities. Despite having no disciplinary record, the Board claimed she had “participated in actions subject to disciplinary violations” and extended her detention for one more year. With this decision, Demirdağ’s release was blocked for the seventh time. The arbitrary nature of the Prison Administration and Observation Board’s decisions continues to result in rights violations and ongoing injustices.
