Case Summary

Hayati Deniz Kaytan, held at Bolu F-Type High-Security Prison, had the gloves he was medically required to wear due to tissue loss in his hand confiscated by the prison’s newly appointed deputy director. The gloves were reportedly necessary for use during the winter months and prescribed in a medical report. The prison director told Kaytan that he did not recognise the medical report. Kaytan requires tissue grafts to his hands and feet. Medical treatment and legal efforts to address his condition have been ongoing for approximately three years. Medical reports assessing whether his health condition allowed him to be held alone in prison have changed over time. The reports, which were reportedly revised three times within one year, initially concluded that Kaytan could be held alone in prison. However, following objections, the latest report, issued a few months ago, stated that he could not be held alone. Kaytan’s lawyer described the confiscation of the gloves he was medically required to wear as psychological torture.
