Case Summary

İlknur Aysan, a mother of two, was detained on Mother’s Day and sent to Kırklareli Prison after being sentenced to 6 years and 10 months in prison on allegations of affiliation with the Gülen movement. She was taken into custody on May 10 after the Court of Cassation upheld her conviction. Aysan is the mother of two young children, one aged 18 months and the other 3.5 years old. Despite still breastfeeding her youngest child, she was not permitted to keep the baby with her in prison. Her family has reportedly been facing serious difficulties for the past week as a result of the separation. A graduate of the mathematics department, Aysan was first detained in 2018 and spent approximately five and a half months in prison before being released. Her sentence was upheld by the Court of Cassation 18 months ago; however, the execution of her sentence had been postponed for 18 months because her baby was still very young. Once this postponement period expired, she was arrested and transferred to prison.
