Case Summary

Filiz Işık has been held in Diyarbakır Women’s Closed Prison for more than five years. Following her trial, she was sentenced to 6 years, 10 months and 15 days in prison on charges of “membership in an organization.” Despite having completed the period required for her release, she was not released on the grounds that she had allegedly stayed in a “biased ward.” Filiz was expected to be released last week; however, the decision of the Prison Administration and Observation Boards resulted in the postponement of her release. The arbitrariness of these boards continues to lead to new violations of law and further victimization on a daily basis.
