LOCATION : İzmir, Turkey
SITUATION : Sentenced to 8 years and 1 month in prison on alleged affiliation with the Gülen movement.
Case Summary
Ibrahim Güngör, a 72-year-old prisoner held in Menemen R-Type Prison, was denied release despite suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and prostate-related health conditions. Güngör was hospitalized twice within a month after developing an infection. His condition had deteriorated to the point where he was no longer able to meet his basic personal needs. During a family visit, he was reportedly unable to recognize his own daughters. Despite his critical condition, the Forensic Medicine Institute issued a report stating that he was “fit to remain in prison.” In recent days, Güngör’s health worsened significantly. He was transferred to the intensive care unit of İzmir City Hospital due to respiratory failure and high fever, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. It was reported that his family was not informed about his condition. After spending 9 days in intensive care, Ibrahim Güngör passed away. Despite numerous calls to the Ministry of Justice, politicians, legal professionals, and artists reacted strongly to the fact that Ibrahim Güngör was effectively left to die in prison.
