MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu once again brought to the agenda the grievances experienced by prisoner Hüseyin Parlak, who died in prison due to severe negligence. Hüseyin Parlak, 70, held in Manisa Alaşehir Prison, suffered a brain hemorrhage on August 8 after fainting under the scorching summer heat. At a time when prison temperatures reached 43 °C, Parlak fell and hit his head on the hard ground, after which he was transferred to the intensive care unit.  Gergerlioğlu pointed out that the hospital and doctors were also negligent, saying: “The prisoner was taken to the emergency room three times, but not a single blood test was conducted. He was sent back with a diagnosis of ‘upper respiratory tract infection.’ On the fourth visit, his sodium level had dropped to 108 due to loss of water and salt, and he was admitted to intensive care in a half-dead state. From that point on, it was no longer possible to save him. The prisoner was being kept in a cell without a toilet door or window, no measures such as ventilation or air conditioning were taken against the extreme heat, and prisoners were unable to meet their basic needs due to water cuts. Because adequate infirmary services were not provided, Parlak’s health condition was not identified in time, and the necessary transfer process was delayed. Rights defenders described the neglect Parlak was subjected to in prison as “being sent to death.” It is emphasized that judicial mechanisms are obliged to implement urgent procedures for seriously ill prisoners held in cells.
