Case Summary

Asaleddin Çelik, a 52-year-old English teacher held in Düzce T-Type Prison, died shortly after a belated sentence deferral decision, following years of struggling with lung cancer. Targeted under the post-2016 decrees, Çelik had been sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison on charges of “organizational links” for having worked at a shuttered school. During his imprisonment, he underwent lung surgery, suffered epileptic seizures, grew so weak that he could no longer stand, and eventually lost consciousness. Transferred to intensive care on July 24, a deferral of his sentence was granted on August 15, but his release came far too late. Çelik died on September 14. His case was repeatedly raised in parliament and in public by MP and human rights defender Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, who emphasized that a fatally ill prisoner had been “kept in custody until the point of no return.
