Case Summary

Sinan Üstev, who was being held in Tekirdağ Prison, died in his cell. During routine checks, prison guards discovered that the prisoner, who had previously been placed in solitary confinement following a fight inside the prison, had died. His death was described as a “suspicious death” by his relatives and human rights defenders. It is reported that there are discriminatory practices against prisoners of Roma ethnic identity in the prison, that the prison administration treats these prisoners differently, and that Roma inmates face greater physical and psychological hardship while in custody. Üstev, who was 26 years old and the father of three children, died under circumstances that have not yet been clarified. His body was sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy. The investigation into his death is still ongoing.
