Case Summary
Nazife Karakoç and Leyla Arslan, who are held in Edirne Prison, were tried in cases filed against them on the grounds that they had worked at institutions closed by decree laws (KHK). Both prisoners were incarcerated despite being pregnant and continue to be held in prison even though their due dates are approaching. They are now being subjected to mistreatment in prison. The family of Nazife Karakoç, who is eight months pregnant, stated that they visited her and that she is going through extremely difficult conditions. Due to her advanced pregnancy, she is taken to the hospital early in the morning every week; however, because she is transported together with other prisoners, she is forced to wait until all procedures are completed late in the evening. During this time, she is not provided with food. She is unable to maintain a healthy diet because the meals served in prison are excessively salty, which causes her blood pressure to rise continuously. It was also reported that fluid has accumulated in the baby’s lungs and that the baby has turned into a breech position in the womb. Her family stated that Karakoç is not in good physical or psychological condition. The family of Leyla Arslan, who is seven months pregnant and held in the same ward, reported similar concerns. Arslan suffers from high blood pressure and takes medication three times a day for this condition. The excessive salt in prison meals causes frequent spikes in her blood pressure. During her previous pregnancy, she experienced severe hypertension and was taken directly into surgery, giving birth by cesarean section. The families stated that both prisoners are at serious risk and emphasized that Nazife Karakoç and Leyla Arslan should be released immediately.
