Profile

VICTIM : Prisoners at Sakarya Open Penal Institution.
INCIDENT 266 prisoners were hospitalized after consuming spoiled food served by the prison.
LOCATION : Sakarya, Turkey

Case Summary

At the Sakarya Ferizli Open Penal Institution campus, canned fish was served to prisoners as part of the evening meal. Shortly after eating, many prisoners began experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue, prompting them to seek medical attention at the infirmary and nearby hospitals. Initially, 131 prisoners were hospitalized, but the total number of those affected later rose to 266. Of these, 141 prisoners were referred to various hospitals; 127 were discharged after treatment, while 14 prisoners are still undergoing medical tests and examinations. A field hospital was set up inside the prison campus, and medical teams carried out screenings and evaluations within the facility. Although officials stated that “no severe health condition has been observed so far,” the scale of the mass illness has raised serious concerns about possible negligence in food safety within the prison.
