Infants and children staying in Bursa Yenişehir Prison together with their mothers are reportedly being subjected to rights violations. According to the latest report published by the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye (TİHEK) regarding prisons, children living with their mothers in prison are not provided with free cribs; cribs and additional beds can only be obtained upon payment. The report, published under Decision No. 2026/344 dated 13 April 2026, stated that 25 children between the ages of 0 and 6 were staying in the prison together with their mothers. During the visit conducted prior to the report, it was found that children were sleeping in the same beds as their mothers. Mothers requesting separate beds were informed by the prison administration that additional beds could be provided only if the cost was covered by them. Because many mothers could not afford the payment, they reportedly continued sharing the same bed with their children. It was also stated that the same practice applied to high chairs for children. The prison administration confirmed this situation. Attention was drawn to the fact that the current practice is contrary to the principle of the “best interests of the child,” and that failing to provide cribs and beds suitable for children’s physical development free of charge could negatively affect their development. The report also noted that toilet and bathroom doors in the wards were rusted and that tiles were broken. It concluded that prison conditions do not provide an environment suitable for the healthy development of children. Food provided by the prison administration was also reported to be insufficient. Some food items that had previously been supplied for children were reportedly no longer provided. In addition, children were given only a very limited number of toys, while access to age-appropriate educational materials and stationery supplies was also described as highly restricted. Over the last year, clothing assistance was provided to 23 prisoners and 45 children staying in prison with their mothers. However, interviewed prisoners stated that most of the distributed clothes were not suitable for seasonal conditions and that a significant portion consisted of used clothing left behind by prisoners who had been released or transferred to other prisons. It was further reported that there was only a single-classroom nursery with one teacher for children aged 3–6 staying in prison with their mothers, and that this service was limited to the academic year. During summer months and other holiday periods, children were deprived of educational and social activities, which was assessed as potentially having negative consequences for their developmental rights and psychosocial well-being.
