Disabled Prisoners in Detention Centers, Critically Ill Prisoners in Turkish:Süleyman Yıldırım

Profile

VICTIM :  Süleyman Yıldırım
INCIDENT : The sick prisoner’s leg will be amputated due to delays in treatment caused by the prison administration.
LOCATION : Denizli, Turkey
SITUATION : Sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison on alleged affiliation with the Gülen movement.

Case Summary

Lawyer Süleyman Yıldırım, who is being held in Denizli Prison, had his left leg amputated below the knee on October 1 due to delayed treatment and medical neglect in prison. His relatives and lawyer requested a suspension of his sentence, citing his critical health condition. However, in a report signed by two internal medicine specialists, one general surgeon, one cardiologist, and one chest diseases specialist, it was stated that Yıldırım’s condition would be reassessed after his treatment was completed and he was discharged from the hospital. Earlier, despite a medical report stating that “he cannot remain under prison conditions and even traveling poses a life-threatening risk,” the Forensic Medicine Institute summoned Yıldırım to Istanbul for evaluation. As his health was too fragile for such travel, Yıldırım could not be transferred. Ultimately, despite being treated in the intensive care unit, no suspension of sentence was granted by the authorities.
