Critically Ill Prisoners in Turkish Prisons – Eda Saraç

Profile

VICTIM :  Eda Saraç
INCIDENT : The prisoner is being denied access to healthcare.
LOCATION : İstanbul, Turkey
SITUATION : Arrested on charges of “insulting the President.”

Case Summary

Eda Saraç, currently held in Bakırköy Women’s Prison, was arrested on October 27, 2025, following a court decision on charges of “insulting the President.” An academic by profession, she has reportedly been subjected to treatment incompatible with human dignity while in prison. For over a week, her clothes have not been delivered, and she has been denied access to the medication she must take regularly. This situation constitutes a clear violation of her right to health, and she has been trying to make her voice heard regarding these conditions. Before her arrest, Saraç was reportedly assaulted and handcuffed while attempting to pass through a security barrier that had been set up for the President’s program. Despite showing her ID and theater ticket, she was beaten, gagged, and taken into custody, and was subsequently placed under arrest.
