Case Summary

Adnan Öztel, who has been held in Tekirdağ Prison for 20 years, suffers from multiple chronic illnesses. Reports indicate that he has a herniated disc, hemorrhoids, and advanced Behçet’s disease, which has led to severe vision loss, dental problems, and stomach disorders. He requires regular medication and ongoing treatment, yet these medical needs are often neglected or delayed in prison. When transferred to the hospital, Öztel is reportedly taken early in the morning and kept handcuffed inside the prison transport vehicle until late in the evening. During this time, he is not allowed to use the restroom, and is forced to wait for long hours in extreme heat during summer and in freezing cold during winter. He is not informed about the results of his medical examinations, and has been made to wait months for procedures such as MRI and ultrasound scans. Additionally, the special diet meals provided in prison are said to be nutritionally poor and insufficient, worsening his overall health condition. Due to the high cost and imported nature of medications used for Behçet’s disease, Öztel faces serious difficulties accessing his essential medicines on a regular basis. Reports indicate that his health has deteriorated rapidly over the past six months, and that it has become extremely difficult for him to survive under current prison conditions. Human rights advocates stress that he should be immediately released and provided with adequate medical treatment in appropriate conditions.
