Critically Ill Prisoners in Turkish Prisons – Abdulvahap Kabak

Profile

VICTIM : Abdulvahap Kabak
INCIDENT : Denial of access to healthcare for a critically ill prisoner.
LOCATION : Bolu, Turkey
SITUATION : The details of the case file remain unknown.

Case Summary

Abdulvahap Kavak, a critically ill prisoner held in Bolu Prison, suffers from multiple chronic and life-threatening medical conditions. He has lung fibrosis, a heart condition with three stents, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, herniated discs in the neck and lower back, a throat nodule, and several other health problems. In recent months, his condition has worsened significantly, and he has begun coughing up blood. The most critical factor worsening his health is the intense dust emitted from a concrete plant located right next to the prison. According to pulmonology specialists, this environmental exposure directly exacerbates lung fibrosis and accelerates the progression of the disease. A medical board evaluation confirmed that the environmental conditions of Bolu Prison are harmful to Kavak’s health and stated clearly that transferring him to another facility is medically necessary and urgent. Despite this assessment, his transfer request has still not been approved. Authorities focus on whether treatment can be provided in Bolu instead of addressing the main issue: hazardous dust exposure. Human rights advocates emphasize that Kavak must be urgently transferred to a facility with healthier conditions and granted immediate access to proper medical care.
