Profile

VICTIM : Tuba Baştuğ, Botan Baştuğ (3 months)

LOCATION : Diyarbakır, Turkey

Case Summary

After being taken into custody in Nusaybin, Mardin, 29-year-old Tuğba Baştuğ was arrested during the second month of her pregnancy and sent to prison. Throughout her pregnancy, she was transferred multiple times between Hakkari, Van, and Diyarbakır prisons. Following a difficult pregnancy under harsh conditions, she gave birth but was allowed to stay in the hospital for only one day. She was then sent back to Diyarbakır No. 1 Type-T Closed Prison with her newborn son Botan, who was just one day old at the time. Now, three months later, she continues to struggle for survival in prison with her infant. Relatives report that poor prison conditions and the negative attitudes of guards have had severe effects on both mother and child. The lack of adequate hygiene and healthcare poses serious risks, particularly for a newborn baby. DEM Party MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu brought the case to public attention, stressing that such practices violate both national laws and international child rights conventions.
