Case Summary
Biology teacher Şeyma Aslan, who had been dismissed from her profession by decree law, was taken into custody on September 26, 2025, in the İpsala district of Edirne. Aslan was subsequently arrested together with her 12-month-old daughter, Meryem Feyza, and sent to Edirne L-Type Prison. The charges brought against her include using the ByLock messaging app, teaching at a private school that was closed, and participating in religious activities with students. Although her conviction is still under review by the Court of Cassation, it was reported that her sentence was not suspended and her detention was continued. It has been underlined that imprisoning a mother and her baby together violates both national legislation and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Turkey is a party. Concerns have also been raised that a baby being forced to grow up in prison conditions poses serious psychological and developmental risks.
