The Freedom of Expression Association (İFÖD) reported on 22 September 2026 that access had been blocked to 194 X accounts with a combined following of about 12 million. It said the orders were issued under Article 8/A of Law No. 5651, on the grounds of protecting national security and public order, in investigations run by the İstanbul and Ankara chief public prosecutors’ offices into allegedly speculative posts about capital-market instruments.
The accounts include the economists Uğur Gürses, Veysel Ulusoy and Bilge Yılmaz, the journalists Naz Yavuzarslan and Dinçer Gökçe, and the actor Orhan Aydın. İFÖD notes that platforms do not apply such orders at the same moment, so some blocked accounts stay visible from Turkey for a period.
On 24 September, İFÖD reported that news articles about the fund crisis had also been blocked on the same grounds, citing items published by Gazete Pencere, Evrensel and Sözcü.
The same day, İFÖD reported that the X account of its own co-founder, Yaman Akdeniz, had been blocked under Article 8/A on the grounds of national security and public order, and withheld by X in Turkey. Akdeniz is a law professor at İstanbul Bilgi University and runs İFÖD’s EngelliWeb project, which documents blocking orders against websites, news reports and social media accounts.
Akdeniz said X had informed him that his account would be restricted but that he had no information about the decision itself. He said he would not open a new account and would challenge the restriction.
Akdeniz was among the applicants in the 2014 Constitutional Court judgment holding that the nationwide blocking of Twitter breached freedom of expression.
Content on other platforms has also been removed. The exiled journalist Cevheri Güven, who is based in Germany, posted on 22 September that YouTube had blocked one of his podcast episodes in Turkey following a court order. The episode concerned the portfolio management companies Pusula and Tera, among other subjects. Güven said it was the second of his videos about Tera to be blocked. The notice from YouTube he published refers to a court order but does not identify the court, the decision or its legal basis.
The background is a crisis in Turkey’s investment-fund market. According to SCF, the Capital Markets Board ordered the liquidation of 131 funds managed by seven portfolio management companies, in which 455,758 investors held about TRY 891 billion, and nine people have been remanded in the related market-manipulation investigation.
In July 2026, the Bakırköy 4th Criminal Judgeship of Peace blocked the X accounts of Amnesty International Turkey, Evrensel, MLSA and Academics for Peace under the same Article 8/A. Two months later, the account of the lawyer who documents such orders was blocked under the same provision.
