Case Summary

In Y-Type, S-Type, and high-security penal institutions in Turkey, human rights violations and ill-treatment are increasing day by day. Prisoners whose sentences are executed in solitary confinement complete their punishment in windowless, unventilated cells without ever seeing sunlight. Moreover, aggravated life imprisonment execution conditions are applied to prisoners who have not been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment. The current living conditions are damaging the mental and physical health of prisoners. Constant surveillance and full isolation within the prison lead to loneliness, pushing solitary confinement conditions to inhumane levels. Hunger strikes are being carried out to demand improvements in prison conditions. It has also been reported that unlawful interventions take place, such as the monitoring of lawyer visits of individuals accused of being members of the Gülen movement.2
