Case Summary

Rümeysa Şanal, who is being held in İzmir Şakran Prison, was detained during an operation carried out in İzmir as part of investigations targeting the Gülen movement and was subsequently arrested on June 9, 2026. The 31-year-old had a 9-month-old baby. During her period in custody, she was not allowed to see her baby and was unable to breastfeed. In her defense before the court, Şanal stated that her baby had cysts in the lungs, required regular medical monitoring and tomography scans, was being fed with breast milk, and depended on her care. Despite these statements, the court did not take her arguments into consideration and ordered her arrest and transfer to Şakran Prison. As a result, she was separated from her 9-month-old baby.
