Case Summary

Systematic human rights violations are taking place in Tokat Type T Closed Prison. It has been reported that severe neglect and discrimination against especially ill prisoners are being used as a means of punishment. These grievances have been brought to the parliament through members of parliament. Reportedly, there are 15 sick prisoners in the prison, 11 of whom are seriously ill.2 Prisoners who refuse the imposed mouth cavity search are denied transfer to the hospital, thereby being effectively deprived of their right to access medical treatment. Prisoners with cataracts who are at risk of losing their sight, those with a history of cancer treatment, and those suffering from heart, kidney, and spinal disorders struggle to survive under prison conditions. The Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) published a report on the human rights violations in Tokat Prison.3 The report emphasized that these violations are not merely medical neglect but constitute clear examples of political punishment.4
