Case Summary

Journalist Perihan Sevda Erkılınç, held in Bakırköy Women’s Closed Prison, is getting worse day by day as she is denied access to proper healthcare. The prisoner, who suffers from celiac disease, chronic asthma, and eczema, requested to be provided with appropriate food considering her condition, but the prison authorities continued to serve her gluten-containing meals. As a result, Erkılınç’s blood pressure dropped as low as 4, and she began to suffer from persistent diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, extreme fatigue, and weakness. After she collapsed, she was taken to the infirmary, but the medical intervention was insufficient, and her health has continued to deteriorate.² The Human Rights Association (İHD), during its 694th F Session on July 12, called for Erkılınç’s release and the protection of her right to life.³ A demonstration held in front of Cologne Cathedral (Köln Dom Hauptbahnhof) also drew attention to the situation of sick prisoners and imprisoned journalists, highlighting Erkılınç’s case.4
