Case Summary
Murat Çalık, Mayor of Beylikdüzü and a prisoner in İzmir Buca Kırıklar Prison who has survived cancer twice, was sent back to prison despite undergoing surgery for a mass in his neck and the continuation of his treatment. The Istanbul Medical Chamber made a statement on July 11 regarding the prisoner, whose detention review was scheduled, saying, “He is not fit to remain in prison, he must be released immediately.”2 Despite this, the court decided to continue his detention. In the medical board report on Çalık, it was stated that remaining in prison conditions could increase the risk of leukemia recurrence and life-threatening infections.3 It was announced that Çalık was transferred to the intensive care unit of İzmir Katip Çelebi University Atatürk Training and Research Hospital.4
