LOCATION : Istanbul, Turkey
SITUATION : Arrested on charges of “Aiding an Attempt to Overthrow the Government.”
Case Summary
Ayşe Barım was arrested in connection with the Gezi Park investigation and an indictment was filed against her on charges of “aiding an attempt to overthrow the Government of the Republic of Turkey or to partially or completely prevent it from performing its duties by use of force and violence,” seeking a prison sentence of 22 years and 6 months to 30 years.2 On July 7, Barım and her lawyers appeared before the judge and submitted a medical board report to the court. The report, dated July 2, stated that the aneurysm in Barım’s brain had expanded and posed a risk of rupture, and that she had six different heart conditions. It was noted that Barım’s health problems have worsened alarmingly in prison, and her release was requested, but the court ruled for the continuation of her detention.
