Case Summary
Ünsalan Özkan, held in Sincan Prison, was a former police officer dismissed by decree (KHK) in 2016. He was prosecuted on allegations of membership in the Gülen movement and sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison. He was first detained in October 2016 and spent eight months in Sincan Prison, followed by 8–9 months in Afyon Dinar Prison, after which he was released. After his conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeals, he was re-arrested approximately 2.5 years ago and sent back to Sincan Prison. On April 30, just three months before the completion of his sentence and his expected release, Özkan suffered a heart attack while playing volleyball. He was immediately transferred to a hospital but could not be saved despite all medical interventions. The 54-year-old prisoner passed away, leaving behind his wife and three children.
