Mehmet Çıtlak, a seriously ill prisoner held in Gaziantep Prison, died while in custody. His deteriorating health condition had previously drawn public attention. Mehmet Türkmen, General President of BİRTEK-SEN, who had shared a prison ward with Çıtlak for a period of time, had previously warned that “it would not be possible for him to survive in prison.” According to available accounts, Çıtlak did not have any serious health problems when he entered prison, but his condition reportedly worsened steadily after being detained. His pain increased, he became bedridden, and eventually he was unable to go to the toilet without assistance from fellow prisoners. Despite repeated calls drawing attention to his condition and multiple requests for his release, he remained in prison until his death. Following this incident, the situation of seriously ill prisoners in Turkish prisons once again became a subject of public discussion.
