Inadequate Living Conditions in Prison – Edirne L-Type Prison

Profile

VICTIM : Prisoners held in Edirne L-Type Prison.
INCIDENT : Ongoing long-term water cuts in the prison.
LOCATION : Edirne, Turkey

Case Summary

Inmates held in Edirne L-Type Prison have been suffering from prolonged water shortages. The issue, brought to public attention by MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, has caused severe hardship for the prisoners. Reports indicate that the wards are overcrowded — with up to 25 people, including babies and small children, confined in areas designed for 12 — while water cuts last up to 15 hours a day. During inspections, guards reportedly confiscated some of the bottled water that inmates had stored, saying, “You’ve stored too much water.” Edirne L-Type Prison, which had previously come to public attention due to sewage leaks and recurring water shortages, continues to experience daily problems. An urgent resolution of the water issue is awaited.
