Case Summary

Seventy-two-year-old Abdullah Tırpan, who is being held in Tekirdağ Prison, was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison on charges of affiliation with the Gülen movement. Following the confirmation of his conviction, he was incarcerated on February 26, 2025. Since entering prison, he has repeatedly been taken to hospital due to his advanced age and numerous health problems. On November 3, 2025, he reportedly lost consciousness because of shortness of breath and persistent vomiting and was transferred to hospital for treatment. After receiving medical care, he was returned to prison. The charges against him reportedly included depositing money in Bank Asya, subscribing to magazines and newspapers, sending his children to schools that were later shut down, and making religious charity and sacrificial donations. According to a medical board report issued on May 7, 2026, by Tekirdağ Dr. İsmail Fehmi Cumalıoğlu Şehir Hastanesi, Tırpan suffers from several chronic illnesses. The report diagnosed him with Type 2 diabetes, diabetes-related joint and nervous system disorders, hypertension, and vision impairments. It also noted neurological complications and the need for physical rehabilitation treatment. Despite these findings, the report did not conclude that imprisonment posed a risk to his health. Tırpan was not evaluated under Article 16/2 of Law No. 5275 concerning the postponement of sentences for severely ill prisoners. Instead, the report stated that he could “continue living independently under prison conditions” and that the execution of his sentence could continue. His family and relatives say they are deeply concerned for his life, arguing that he is unable to meet even his basic personal needs on his own.
