Case Summary

Şefika Kandar, held in Diyarbakır Prison, has been incarcerated since June 2021. During her time in prison, she suffered two heart attacks. Despite her health condition being unfit for detention, the Forensic Medicine Institution (ATK) issued a report stating that she could remain in prison. Kandar underwent angioplasty due to vascular blockage and was frequently referred to hospitals because of other health problems. In recent periods, she has been able to sustain her daily life only with the support of her cellmates. She has metal implants in her legs and therefore requires physical therapy every two weeks. Having undergone multiple surgeries on different parts of her body, Kandar was also referred to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institution due to her chronic conditions; however, she was not granted release.
