Case Summary

Mehmet Salih Filiz, who is being held in Buca Prison, was arrested in Mersin in 2016 and sentenced to 17 years in prison. Despite his serious illnesses, he continues to be held in prison. During his imprisonment, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. The disease is in an advanced stage and, according to his family, he suffers from constant internal bleeding. For this reason, he cannot eat normally and survives on nutritional formula. Due to severe disorders in his digestive system, he has to go to the toilet very frequently. Therefore, he is forced to spend 24 hours a day in an area very close to the toilet. In a medical report dated 13 June 2023, it is clearly stated that Filiz cannot sustain his life on his own and must remain under constant supervision and care. Despite this, he is being held without a caregiver and in a solitary cell. Under the current circumstances, keeping him in prison poses a vital, life-threatening risk. Nevertheless, his sentence has not been suspended and his release has not been granted.
