Devrim Ayık, who is held in Antalya Prison, was arrested in 2015 on charges of “membership in an organization” and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Ayık suffers from multiple serious health conditions while in prison. He has had part of his intestines removed, completely lost vision in his right eye, and his left eye is myopic with a prescription of 34 diopters. He also has hearing loss of 30% in his right ear and 50% in his left ear, and has a 76% disability rating. Ayık’s mother, Hülya Ayık, reported that on February 2, her son was taken to Antalya Training and Research Hospital for an eye examination. She stated that the doctor noted damage to the cells at the back of his eye and recommended glasses with a 32-diopter prescription for his left eye. However, after the examination, Ayık reportedly did not receive a new pair of glasses, prescription, or medical report. When Ayık returned for a follow-up examination, the doctor allegedly told him, “I have already examined you; according to you, I am not providing treatment, according to you, I am not issuing referrals, leave.” Ayık’s vision problems are worsening, and complications from Crohn’s disease pose a serious risk due to the lack of regular access to medical care. His family has stated that proper referrals and treatment have not been provided and expressed serious concerns regarding his right to life.
