Case Summary

Two-years-old Azra Sarıoğlu has been held in Sincan Women’s Prison together with her mother, Emine Sarıoğlu. Emine Sarıoğlu, a former social studies teacher dismissed by decree (KHK), was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for working at a private tutoring center closed by decree. After the sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeals, she was detained on October 27, 2025, and sent to Sincan Women’s Prison with her then 20-month-old daughter, Azra. Her 4-year-old son remains outside in the care of his father. Member of Parliament Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu met with Sarıoğlu during a visit to the prison. Sarıoğlu stated that the prison environment is not suitable for a baby’s development and that growing up in prison has led to traumatic consequences for her daughter. She described that Azra, after seeing prisoners being handcuffed during hospital transfers, would extend her own hands as if expecting to be handcuffed. During the visit, Gergerlioğlu attempted to give Azra a toy doll, but prison authorities did not allow it. It was also noted that prisons are severely overcrowded, with wards designed for 12 people reportedly housing 35 to 37 inmates.
