Prisons in Türkiye continue to draw attention due to severe overcrowding. Prison wards are being filled far beyond their intended capacity with detainees and convicted prisoners. During his visit to Sincan Prison, Member of Parliament Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu drew attention to what he described as the dire conditions inside the facility. According to Gergerlioğlu, some wards designed for 28 people were holding 60 prisoners, while in certain wards the number had reached as high as 68. It was reported that detainees and prisoners no longer had enough space to sleep and that some were laying mattresses on top of lockers in order to rest. Due to the overcrowding, prisoners were reportedly unable to meet even their basic daily needs. Long queues formed for toilets and showers, the amount of hot water provided was insufficient for the number of people, and in many cases the water ran out before everyone could use it. Because plastic tables and chairs had been allocated according to the original capacity of the wards, prisoners reportedly had to eat in shifts due to the current population levels. It was also stated that the lack of space in common areas made even religious practices difficult to carry out, with prisoners reportedly performing prayers in turns. The facilities and resources provided according to the normal ward capacity were said to be insufficient for the current population, and even access to outdoor exercise areas had reportedly become rotational. It was emphasized that minimum living standards must be ensured for prisoners during the execution of sentences, and it was recalled that current practices should be assessed within the framework of the prohibition of “inhuman or degrading treatment.”
