Case Summary
Erol Şengök, an 89-year-old shopkeeper held in Sincan Prison, was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison as part of investigations targeting the Gülen movement. After his sentence was upheld by the Court of Cassation, he was arrested on June 11, 2025, and sent to prison. Şengök, who suffers from multiple illnesses and is confined to a wheelchair, has been struggling to survive under prison conditions. Despite his advanced age and serious health problems, the execution of his sentence was not postponed, and he continued to be held in prison. DEM Party Member of Parliament Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu visited him in prison. During the visit, Şengök stated that his life was at serious risk due to prison conditions and expressed the severity of his situation by saying, “I am the oldest prisoner in Turkish prisons. I think they will kill me here.” Despite his serious medical condition, the execution of his sentence was not suspended. Instead, he was only offered transfer options to R-Type prisons in Istanbul and İzmir, but his family did not have the means to travel to those cities. There are serious concerns about his life, and his release is expected as soon as possible.
