Abdullah Tırpan, a 73-year-old prisoner held in Tekirdağ Prison, was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison on allegations of membership in the Gülen movement. Following the finalization of his conviction, he was sent to prison on February 26, 2025. Since entering prison, he has been referred to hospitals multiple times due to his advanced age and deteriorating health condition. He had previously been hospitalized after losing consciousness but was returned to prison following treatment. In February, his condition worsened again and a doctor was called after he became unable to speak. Once his condition stabilized, he was reportedly told that there was no serious problem and was sent back to prison. However, the MRI that had reportedly been requested at that time was carried out only months later. The results showed a 75 percent blockage in his brain vessels. Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu stated that seriously ill prisoners had recently died in prisons and that human rights violations had been taking place, and brought Tırpan’s case to the attention of parliament. Gergerlioğlu stated that continuing to keep the prisoner in custody was not consistent with humanitarian considerations. Tırpan was reported to suffer from diabetes, with wounds on his feet that did not heal, and to experience frequent lung infections. He was described as requiring care and being unable to meet even his basic toileting needs on his own. It was stated that the health condition of the prisoner, whose life remained at risk, continued to deteriorate day by day. The sentence against the prisoner was reportedly based on reasons including depositing money into Bank Asya, subscribing to magazines and newspapers, sending his children to schools that were later closed, and making himmet and sacrificial donations.
