Hacer Kılıç, a primary school teacher dismissed from public service under a decree-law, was arrested in Edirne and sent to prison after her 6-year-and-3-month prison sentence was upheld on 16 February 2026. Kılıç, who has been in prison for three months, has four children aged 4, 6, 15 and 17. After requesting a transfer to a prison closer to her family, Kılıç was transferred to Aksaray T-Type Prison after spending 1.5 months in Edirne Prison. Her two youngest children, aged 4 and 6, are being cared for by their sick grandmother. Kılıç’s sibling stated that the family had to move from Ankara to Aksaray, that their grandmother was unable to adequately care for the children, that the children had been experiencing significant psychological difficulties following their mother’s arrest, and that the 6-year-old child, who is blind, is dependent on their mother’s care. The living conditions at Aksaray Prison, where Kılıç is currently being held, are considered inadequate; the prison experiences prolonged water cuts and overcrowding beyond its capacity in the wards. Kılıç and her relatives are requesting her release, even under judicial control measures.
