Case Summary
Hatice Yıldız, a 77-year-old woman, was tried on charges of “providing financial support to an organisation” for sending money to her daughter, who was imprisoned, and her daughter’s cellmates. She was sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison. Following the finalisation of her sentence, she was taken from her home on a stretcher on 22 March 2023 and transferred to Bakırköy Women’s Closed Prison. Yıldız suffers from several health conditions, including dementia, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, a herniated disc, spinal curvature and impaired vision. Her health reportedly deteriorated in prison, where she also underwent eye surgery. The Forensic Medicine Institute issued two reports stating that she was fit to remain in prison. Yıldız’s request for supervised release was rejected by the Prison Administration and Observation Board on the grounds that she had not “disassociated herself from the organisation” and had a disciplinary penalty. Her family and lawyer stated, however, that no disciplinary penalty had been communicated to her, that her health was deteriorating and that she was struggling to manage daily activities independently. They called for her release in consideration of her health condition.
