Case Summary

Mehmet Durak Karak, who has been imprisoned for 31 years and is currently held in Erzincan Prison, was not released despite completing the portion of his sentence required to be served in prison. In its latest assessment, the Prison Administration and Observation Board postponed his release for an additional six months on the grounds that he had not accepted a “repentance requirement.” Karak was tried before the State Security Courts (DGM) in 1995 and sentenced to life imprisonment for “undermining the unity of the state.” He has remained in prison ever since. Prior to this sentence, he had also spent periods of detention lasting four years, one and a half years, and eight months. Although he completed the 30-year term required for release in June 2025, he was not released and has remained in prison for an additional year. In 2025, Karak’s son died of a heart attack. When he requested permission to attend the funeral, the Ministry of Justice initially denied the request. He was later taken to the mourning house in handcuffs. His family is calling for what they describe as an injustice to be brought to an end and for his immediate release.
