Case Summary

Fatma Tokmak, incarcerated in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Closed Prison, remains behind bars despite her severe illnesses. Following the Court of Cassation’s approval of her life sentence, Tokmak has been imprisoned since 2010. She suffers from serious heart disease, asthma, and hypertension, all of which pose life-threatening risks. Although multiple requests for suspension of her sentence were filed, they were consistently rejected based on negative reports from the Forensic Medicine Institute. Tokmak’s condition has gradually worsened. During her fifth angiography, examinations revealed a tear and severe narrowing in her heart valve, yet she has not been operated on. The Human Rights Association (İHD), the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD), the Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD), and the Society and Legal Research Foundation (TOHAV) held a press conference to draw attention to her situation.² The prisoner’s release is expected before it is too late.
