On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Solidarity with OTHERS organised a brief exhibition on November 20, 2019 at the Luxembourg Square in Brussels, prior to the European Parliament’s High-Level Conference on the Rights of the Child.
The demonstration aimed to raise awareness about the most vulnerable and the most innocent victims targeted by the Turkish government’s indiscriminate crackdown on dissent since July 2016.
At the event, nearly 50 participants from across Europe displayed banners about the rights violations against children in Turkey, specifically those locked up behind bars alongside their mothers who are faced with politically motivated trials.
We also remembered 26 Turkish children who have lost their lives as a result of the Turkish government’s systematic disrespect of human rights since July 2016, such as the 17 children who have passed away at the Evros river or on the Aegean Sea while attempting to flee the country with their parents, three who have died while under custody and four others who have been killed in traffic accidents while they were on their way to visit imprisoned family members.
We called for an end to the practice of imprisonment of women with infant children in contravention of Turkey’s very own laws.
We also called on the European Union and the international community to urge the Turkish government to put an end to its rights abuses against children.
