INCIDENT : Tatvan prison inmates are experiencing a bedbug infestation. In addition, the prison is holding more inmates than its capacity allows.
LOCATION : Bitlis, Turkey

Case Summary

Prisoners held in Tatvan Open Correctional Institution have been facing a bedbug infestation and hygiene problems. The issue was brought before the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM) by Serhat Eren, a DEM Party MP from Diyarbakır. It was stated that the prisoners’ rights to health and life are at risk. Despite fumigation carried out to address the bedbug infestation, the problem could not be resolved. In addition, approximately 1,500 prisoners are being held in a facility with an official capacity of 960. The number of prisoners exceeding the institution’s capacity has resulted in severe overcrowding. Overcrowding and inadequate hygiene conditions are making living conditions increasingly difficult for prisoners.
