Case Summary

73-year-old Abdullah Tırpan was sent to prison on 26 February 2025 after his 7-year and 6-month prison sentence became final. Tırpan has advanced diabetes, hypertension and nerve damage; he has reportedly experienced loss of sensation in his hands and feet and developed wounds on his feet that have failed to heal. A medical board report prepared in May 2026 stated that he had Type 2 diabetes, diabetic arthropathy, diabetic polyneuropathy, hypertension and visual impairment. After experiencing difficulty speaking in February 2026, a brain MRI was requested; however, it was performed approximately four months later, on 8 June, and the examination revealed severe narrowing in the cerebral blood vessels and a risk of stroke. In July, Tırpan was hospitalised due to wounds on his feet and underwent surgery. In September, he was referred to hospital again, where he underwent an angiography and remained in intensive care overnight. Following an open visit on 8 September, Tırpan was taken to Çam and Sakura Hospital and transferred the following day to Metris R-Type Prison as a “guest prisoner.” He was returned to Tekirdağ No. 2 T-Type Prison one day later. His daughter, Refia Tırpan, stated that his health deteriorated further during this process and that he lost a significant amount of weight. In its latest report concerning Tırpan, the Forensic Medicine Institute assessed that he could remain in an R-Type prison instead of being released. Tırpan is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Justice for his transfer to Metris R-Type Prison. His family, however, has called for his release, objecting to his continued imprisonment despite the deterioration of his health. Tırpan has been transferred to hospital numerous times due to his health problems since his imprisonment. An earlier medical report had assessed that he could maintain his life under prison conditions and stated that there was no medical obstacle to his continued imprisonment under Article 16/2 of Law No. 5275. Tırpan was convicted and sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison on grounds including depositing money in Bank Asya, subscribing to religious publications, sending his children to schools that were later closed down, and making humanitarian donations.
