Case Summary

Mehmet Edip Taşar, a 68-year-old seriously ill inmate held in Marmara (Silivri) Prison, continues to remain incarcerated despite his critical health problems. The prisoner, who suffers from heart failure and other cardiovascular issues, has undergone a total of 18 angioplasty procedures, during which 8 stents were placed in his heart vessels. He also suffers from chronic diabetes and, due to the progression of his illness, is unable to walk without assistance. Although he has been referred to the Forensic Medicine Institute three times, his requests for the postponement of his sentence have been rejected. Most recently, on November 3, he was transferred to a hospital but was returned to prison on the grounds that he had “recovered.” Shortly after being sent back, he fell ill again and was taken to the prison infirmary. The inmate is unable to meet his personal needs and survives with the help of his cellmates. His family is deeply concerned about his deteriorating health and calls for an urgent suspension of his sentence.
