Mehmet Darga, who is being held at Espiye Prison, is being denied release despite his health conditions. Darga was detained in Mersin in 1992 and subsequently arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. The prisoner, who has spent 34 years in prison, suffers from a heart condition; he underwent angioplasty twice while in prison and had a stent inserted. Darga also underwent eye surgery due to cataracts. The prisoner had previously been placed in a single-person cell and came to public attention because he was unable to manage his daily life on his own. His family has stated that they are concerned about the prisoner’s health and are calling for his release.
