Open letter in support of Turkey's leading rights defender receives widespread participation

Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu

The London-based International Observatory of Human Rights (IOHR) has published an open letter addressed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to express solidarity with Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, member of Turkish parliament and one of Turkey's foremost champions of human rights who has recently been the target of a seemingly concerted smear campaign by government officials as well as pro-government media after raising in parliament the issue of arbitrary and unjustified strip-searches in prison and in police custody, a practice that particularly aims to humiliate those detained and imprisoned on political grounds in Turkey.

IOHR's call was echoed by scores of human rights organizations as well as politicians, academics and leading civil society figures from across the world. Solidarity with OTHERS is proud to be one of the letter's signatories. Click here to reach the IOHR's announcement and the contents of the letter.
