Case Summary

Abdullah Tırpan, 73, continues to be held in prison despite suffering from diabetes, hypertension, nerve damage, impaired vision and serious circulatory problems. On 8 October 2026, İstanbul MP Mustafa Yeneroğlu visited Tırpan at Metris R-Type Prison. Yeneroğlu reported that Tırpan was brought to the visiting room in a wheelchair, was unable to stand and had advanced gangrene in his left leg. He also noted that Tırpan had large open wounds and severe bruising on his foot, warning that amputation might become necessary. Previous medical reports concerning Tırpan’s health have also become a matter of concern. In a report dated 17 December 2025, the Council of Forensic Medicine stated that Tırpan could remain in prison despite his health problems. The medical board at Tekirdağ Dr. İsmail Fehmi Cumalıoğlu City Hospital also identified several conditions in its report dated 7 May 2026, including Type 2 diabetes, diabetes-related nerve damage and joint problems, hypertension and impaired vision, but did not conclude that remaining in prison would pose a medical risk. In a second report dated 30 June 2026, the board again concluded that there were no grounds requiring a postponement of his sentence. The reports stated that Tırpan could meet his daily needs without assistance and continue living under prison conditions. Yeneroğlu stated that what he observed during his visit did not correspond with the assessments in the medical reports. He said that Tırpan could not stand, lift his leg or meet his basic needs independently. Yeneroğlu also noted that prison staff were assisting Tırpan to the extent possible, but criticised the continued imprisonment of someone with such serious health problems. He called for Tırpan to be transferred to a hospital immediately for inpatient treatment and for the execution of his sentence to be postponed under Article 16 of Law No. 5275 on the Execution of Sentences and Security Measures. Tırpan was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison for “membership in an armed terrorist organisation” based on allegations of links to the Gülen Movement. The activities cited in connection with his conviction included holding an account at Bank Asya, subscribing to the Zaman newspaper, sending his children to private schools, attending religious gatherings and making donations.
