Case Summary

Celal Yıldırım, a 56-year-old prisoner held at Şanlıurfa No. 2 T-Type Closed Prison, became unwell and lost consciousness on 2 October 2026 after experiencing pain in his chest and the back of his head. He was first transferred to Hilvan State Hospital and then to Şanlıurfa Training and Research Hospital. It took 2.5 hours for Yıldırım to reach the hospital, located approximately 55 kilometres away. It was reported that traffic congestion caused by Teknofest contributed to the delay in his transfer. Following two angiography procedures, Yıldırım reportedly developed heart failure, with his heart functioning at only 10–15% capacity. His condition remained life-threatening, and he continued to be kept under medical observation at the hospital. Yıldırım’s wife stated that her husband had not had any health problems before entering prison and that she learned of his hospitalisation not from the prison administration or official institutions, but through the families of other prisoners. She also reported that doctors had warned that Yıldırım’s heart could stop at any moment due to the delay in medical intervention. His family, stating that the prison conditions were unsuitable given his health condition, held the government responsible for his current condition and called for him not to be returned to prison until his treatment had been completed.
